Abstract

Independence Day in Grand Forks

Celebrating America’s 236th birthday, Independence Day in the Red River Valley means enjoying the great weather, hitting the links, barbeques, maybe tubing down a lazy river, getting a few games of Ladder Golf, or just taking in the warm weather with friends and family.

In the northern valley, Grand Forks has events planned all day, beginning with the YMCA Firecracker Run/Walk at 8 AM. The Patriotic Kid's Parade (sponsored by the Grand Forks Park District) gets underway at noon, and is followed by lots of fun downtown, including face painting, a flag raising, a beer garden, Tae Kwon Do demonstrations, and many other games and musical acts.

Of course, for many, Independence Day is about fireworks and the annual displays that inspire our patriotism. Grand Fork's 53rd Annual fireworks display will begin at dusk (around 10:30 PM) on July 4th, and should be visible from anywhere downtown.

How to Photograph Fireworks

Stay Safe

For many, Independence Day is the one time of year when they will use and enjoy fireworks, but also create their own personal fireworks displays. For Grand Forks, unless a person has a permit from the GF Fire Department, displays are not permitted.

According to Jason Uhlir, UND's Director of Campus Safety and Security/Risk Management, “the safest way to enjoy fireworks, is to go to a professional demonstration.”

Have Fun

Whether you spend a quiet weekend hanging out with friends, or taking advantage of the community events lined-up for the Fourth, the holiday gives us all the time to take a moment and give thanks for things that make this country great. Have a Happy Independence Day!
