Daumier here reveals his negative view of the legal profession by showing lawyers to be uninterested in justice and only concerned with self-interest. The attorney is well aware of his client’s guilt, and with this in mind, thinks getting him acquitted will all-the-more enhance his standing as a trial lawyer.

Included in the Honoré Daumier III: Law, Medicine, and Social Satire exhibition, 2018.
