From James Carley's notes:
Large cylindrical stoneware jar 15 1/2" high, 12" dia. Salt glaze. Brown slip inside. Two neat handles, with four incised lines at about shoulder height. Skillful painting in blue. Purchased antique show, Indpls. Mr. Hammann (whose people were PA Dutch) feels some doubt that this & #255 are American. They show such mastery he thinks they may be at least by a European trained potter, possibly English.
