Homer B. Sprague (often referred to as "Colonel"), appointed as the second president of the University of North Dakota (1887-1891), practiced law, rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel during the Civil War, and served as head of several high schools and colleges prior to coming to the University of North Dakota. As president, he promoted the university, established military training, and organized athletics. He also served as the first president of the North Dakota Education Association. He resigned in 1891 because of personal political disappointments and projections of difficult economic times in the state. In 1916, Sprague was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Law.
