Description

Thirteen student-performers of the 1921 May Fete wearing flower petal costumes. A white fence with small trees is in place behind the performers. The Adelphi Fountain is centered behind the fence gates. Merrifield Hall Main is in the background. The back of the photo identifies Laura Kelly (Kennyen) second from right, Frieda Hammers (Rich) third from left, Doris Payne at front right, and Geraldine McNicol (Robbins) third from right. The May Fete was a modest production from 1909-1916 until Nell Martindale took over as head and expanded the small show into a spectacular dance-drama. From 1917 to 1927, May Fete saw elaborate sets and as many as 500 performers. The last May Fete was in 1927 when Martindale resigned to be married.
