In this audiovisual recording from Tuesday, March 19, 1985, as part of the 16th Annual UND Writers Conference: “Narratives,” Barry Hannah, Sandra Birdsell, and Thomas McGrath participate in a panel called “Place in the Narrative.” The panelists discuss their development of a written sense of place, how culture comes out of place, the importance of place to developing writers, attempting to write to specific style, political changes that negatively affect the arts in the U.S. and Canada, contemporary popular music, and recommendations for aspiring writers, all of which involve constant reading.
