James Butler obtained his BS in 1967 from the University of Omaha and his MFA in 1970 from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Butler was Professor of Art at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville from 1970 to 1976, then held a similar position at Illinois State University from 1976 to 1981. Butler mostly worked with prints and lithographs using photographs.
