Artist Bio

Brown (1879-1956) was born in Decatur, Illinois. After attending the Art Students League in New York, he undertook study in Paris, staying there several years and often exhibiting his art. In 1914, shortly before the outbreak of World War I, Brown returned to the United States, where he established a national reputation as a painter by 1920. The painting by Brown at UND has a distinguished provenance. It was formerly the possession of the prominent American art collector, Chester Dale (1883-1962).
