Abstract

Purpose: The problem of this study was to determine the relationship of selected predictor variables to typewriting performance in straight copy typewriting, as well as timed application typewriting on letters, manuscripts, and tabulation at the end of the second semester of a first-year typewriting course.

Procedure:

The population for this study consisted of 199 eleventh grade second semester typewriting students enrolled at Mandan High School, Mandan, North Dakota. Through the cooperation of the high school administration and the instructors, the students were tested on the General Aptitude Test Battery administered by the Mandan Office of the State Employment Service at the beginning of the second semester of the 1969-1970 school year. The first two test parts of the Typewriting Achievement Test were also administered to the students at the beginning of the second semester. The tenth grade cumulative grade point average, tenth grade English grades, tenth grade mathematics grades, and students' absenteeism were obtained from the students' permanent records at the high school. The General Aptitude Test Battery, the first two test parts of the Typewriting Achievement Test along with the information from the students' permanent records provided sixteen variables at the beginning of the second semester that were used as predictors of application typewriting achievement at the end of the second semester. Straight copy timed writings, business letter timed writings, revised manuscript timed writings, and tabulation timed writings at the end of the second semester ·were administered by the use of the Typewriting Achievement Test.

The student's t Test statistic was used to determine whether significant differences existed between boys and girls on the variables selected for the study.

A stepwise backward multiple regression analysis was used in order to obtain the correlation coefficient (r) and the multiple correlation coefficient (R) between the independent (predictor) variables obtained at the beginning of the second semester and the dependent (criterion) variables obtained at the end of the second semester. Separate analysis were made for boys, girls, and boys and girls combined.
