Abstract

Health and wellness coaching (HWC) is a vital and growing profession effective in preventing and managing chronic diseases. The National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) established comprehensive training guidelines to advance and uphold the field. Each NBHWC-approved program develops a unique curriculum blending education strategies with NBHWC content requirements that prepare individuals to become aspiring health and wellness coaches (HWCs). Pedagogical approaches are well studied; however, education strategies utilized in NBHWC programs and across competency categories are not widely known. Thus, this three-article dissertation provides an understanding of educational strategies used within NBHWC programs. This study aims to inform teaching strategies for NBHWC program curricula. In this qualitative analysis, 12 program coordinators and instructors participated in semi-structured interviews investigating education strategies, forming the basis for the study. Data was collected and analyzed using transcription and coding in a top-down open and axial approach. Interview recipients were predominantly female (11). Findings of significant education strategies include discussion, experiential learning, feedback, and assessment. Additional strategies such as asynchronous learning, guest speakers, and scaffolding content are regularly mentioned within certain competency categories. Findings are employed for various reasons, including instructor experience and student engagement. Strategies align with a learner-centered teaching approach. Research on pedagogy informs practices for teaching in NBHWC programs and may impact how program coordinators and instructors develop curricula for teaching future health coaches. Instructors want to be effective and efficient in instructional practice to improve the student experience, increase chances of success on the NBHWC exam, and add to the rigor and progress of the health and wellness coaching HWC field. Ultimately, this can improve the health of the nation.
