Abstract

Background and Purpose: Avascular necrosis is a disease that results from the temporary or permanent loss of blood supply to the bone. This case study evaluates the effectiveness of physical therapy following a unilateral total hip arthroplasty (THA) for management of avascular necrosis. The purpose of this case study is to provide information regarding avascular necrosis, its prognosis, and the best forms of treatment with or without surgery.

Case Description: The patient was a 70-year-old female who received post-surgical physical therapy in the outpatient setting to regain functional mobility and a return to prior level of function.

Intervention: The therapy provided emphasized the use of both traditional THA exercises, functional exercises and manual therapy techniques.

Outcomes: Over the course of treatment, the patient could increase her hip ROM, ambulation distance, and functional mobility while decreasing her pain.

Discussion: The patient responded favorably to treatment, and many of the goals established were met. However, more research must be done to distinguish the best treatment protocol for effectively treating avascular necrosis and rehabilitation of unilateral THA.
