Artist Bio
Jessie Palczewski is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. She was born in 1981 in Eagle Butte, South Dakota. As a young person, Palczewski spent much of her time working on art projects with her mother. She pursued her interest in art further during her years at Black Hills State University, where she received her BA in 2003. Palczewski continued her education at the University of North Dakota, completing her MFA in 2006. Palczewski combines her formal art training with the traditional skills in beadwork and quilting she learned as a child. Her work has been shown in both North and South Dakota and has been purchased by the University of North Dakota Art Collections and the North Dakota Museum of Art.
Additional Information
Among the artist's works purchased by UND Art Collections are two large quilted pieces. While the star designs relate to Native tradition, the process and materials used to create the works do not. To make them, Palczewski utilized prints she found in the Art Department's printmaking facility. The prints were cut into strips and the deconstructed imagery was recycled into large paper quilts, at times charged with highly personal associations related to the artist's life experiences as a Native American.
