Artist Bio

Richard Lomahinma Dawavendewa was born and raised in the Hopi village of Moenkopi, Arizona. He uses his Hopi name, Lomahinma (“Handsome Sun in the Sky”), to sign his work – a nod to his Native heritage.

Dawavendewa received his MFA at UND. Aside from what he learned as an art student, his artworks are filled with subject matter of symbolic meaning that is deeply rooted in in his life experiences as a Hopi, rather than in Western traditions of his fine art training. He credits his grandfather, who was a well-respected elder in their community, for instilling in him a deep respect and knowledge of his culture.
