Description
Photograph of the Shriner's parade on Third Street in 1969. Many cars and onlookers line the street to watch as the parade passes by. In the background the following businesses can be seen: Valley Bank, Scotts Music Store, Valley Bank, American Legion Club, Munn's Jewelry, Palace Cafe, and Dakota Theatre. The war film "Hell in the Pacific" is shown playing at the Dakota Theatre.
Shriner parades, characterized by their Middle Eastern theme, elaborate costumes, and quirky vehicles, have a long and rich history intertwined with the organization's broader philanthropic and fraternal mission. Originally established in 1872 as a Masonic society, Shriners International (AAONMS) quickly embraced the Near Eastern theme and its associated pageantry. This led to the development of elaborate parades and festivals as a way to celebrate their brotherhood and raise funds for their charitable endeavors.
