About the Climate & Culture Festival:

Climate & Culture Festival—organized by the UND Department of Earth System Science & Policy (ESSP)—aims to bring people together to think and talk about how climate and climate issues are important for North Dakota culture (and beyond). The four-day event will showcase how culture and climate are linked in a variety of artistic and research endeavors across campus and into the greater Grand Forks community. The Climate & Culture Festival parallels the international climate conference in Paris Nov. 30-Dec. 11); organizers of the festival also aim to raise awareness about the importance of the international climate treaty negotiations and how decisions by the participating nations will have local and global significance. The principal coordinator for the event is Rebecca Romsdahl, a Fulbright scholar and associate professor in ESSP. Romsdahl teaches classes on environmental policy and communication. Her research examines issues at the interface between environmental science and public policy.

Climate & Culture will include a mix of interdisciplinary displays of science, art, and photography, a panel discussion, film screenings and discussions, and a headline speaker.

Will Steger, Polar dog-sledding explorer and climate educator, is the headline speaker. Steger’s international adventures in dog-sledding across the Arctic, Antarctica, and Greenland give him a unique perspective and personal experiences in observing how the Earth’s climate is changing. His experiences speak to the importance of understanding both local and global issues concerning climate change.

Climate & Culture Festival events are free and open to all members of the UND campus and the greater Grand Forks communities.
