Original text: Si vous vouliez avoir la bonté de plaider ma cause, vous pourriez compter su mon éternelle reconnaissance!...

Here an indigent man pleads with a lawyer to represent him out of “kindness,” of which Daumier’s lawyer is surely lacking. The man seeking legal help offers only his ongoing “gratitude” in return. The lawyer responds by turning his back and, with his nose held in the air, snubs the poor man’s request. Daumier apparently viewed the lawyers of his day as heartless and insensitive to people lacking the means to afford their services.

Included in the Honoré Daumier III: Law, Medicine, and Social Satire exhibition, 2018.
