Original text: UN LUTTEUR MALHEUREUX.
In this print, Ratapoil, a fictitious character who Daumier created, offers “balm” to soothe injuries of an emaciated fighter. The beaten man was a real French politician, Léon Léonard Joseph Faucher (1803-1854), whose effort to change France’s Constitution had recently failed to get enough votes to pass in the French Parliament.
Included in the Honoré Daumier III: Law, Medicine, and Social Satire exhibition, 2018.
