Artist Bio

George Maciunas was born in 1931 in Kaunas, Lithuania and passed away in 1978. From 1949 to 1952 Maciunas studied graphic art and architecture at the Cooper Union School of Art and at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh he obtained a Bachelor's of Architecture in 1954. He is best known as the founder of the Fluxus movement and assistance at Wooster Enterprises in SoHo in 1979. This stationary company combined business with radical and clever artwork consisting of photographic postcards of belly buttons, pre-crumpled paper, oddly titled stationary and so on. George Maciunas has work in the permanent collections of the Modern Museum of Art, The Walker Art Center, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and several others.
