Artist Bio

Janis K. Sternbergs was born in 1900 in Liepaja, Latvia. He studied at the Art Academy in Riga and then went to Vienna and studied engraving under Ferdinand Schuernboeck. For a short time he worked as an engraver for the Mint and Printing Shop for Government papers of Latvia. Later on he immigrated to the U.S. and came to the University of Kentucky in 1949 and taught from 1964 to 1967. He is best known for his photography of lines in sand, which cast interesting shadows that play with the idea of depth, color, and earth sculpture.
