Shahn (1898-1969) was renowned from the 1930s onward for his representational paintings that focused attention on what he viewed as social wrongs, such as the plight of coal miners, the underprivileged in the cities, victims of political injustice, etc. The portrait of Michael Schwerner is from a set of 3 prints at UND related to the villainous and well-known murders of three civil rights workers in Mississippi.
