Abstract

Clinical education is a critical component of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) programs, serving as the primary bridge between academic instruction and professional practice. However, traditional clinical rotation training models often struggle to keep pace with rapid advancements in laboratory technology, expanding professional responsibilities, workforce shortages, and heightened patient safety expectations. The purpose of this capstone project is to examine the key factors driving the need to update training methodologies in MLS clinical rotations and to evaluate contemporary educational approaches that better prepare students for entry-level practice. This project addresses systemic challenges faced by clinical laboratories, such as staffing constraints, heavy workloads, and variability of skilled preceptors. Current literature and professional standards highlight the limitations of time-based, task-oriented training models and support a shift toward competency-based education, standardized learning outcomes, and structured assessment tools. Updated training methodologies—including simulation-based learning, blended instructional models, case-based learning, and reflective practice—are examined for their effectiveness in promoting critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and patient safety. These approaches offer practical solutions to reduce preceptor burden while maintaining educational quality and consistency across diverse clinical environments. Fifteen articles were selected from a literature review conducted through CINHAL and PubMed, with the addition of three relevant articles to provide applicable background information. The findings of this project suggest that modernizing MLS clinical rotation training through the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) is necessary to ensure that graduates are competent, adaptable, and prepared to meet the demands of contemporary laboratory practice. Implementing updated, standardized, and competency-focused training methodologies can improve student outcomes, support clinical sites, and enhance overall healthcare quality.
